There are weddings you plan. And then there are weddings that stay with you.
When I found out that Andy & Doug were planning to marry I messaged Andy straight away and asked if they would need a celebrant. You see, me and Andy shared a chapter after Uni, as housemates, we lived together for 3 years and during that very exciting and terrifying transition from being carefree students to growing into professional, level headed adults, Andy met Doug.
This was also the first same-sex wedding ceremony script I’d ever written. Writing for two people I know so deeply and delivering it to a room full of familiar faces, was one of the most meaningful and exciting things I’ve done as a celebrant.
The moment nobody was prepared for
The grooms` niece stood up to do a reading, she’s thirteen and after delivering her wonderful reading, she paused and added something of her own. She told us that she was so proud to have been born in the same year same-sex marriage became legal in UK and that because of that, she gets to grow up watching her uncle fall in love and get married to his partner. It was the most perfect, unrehearsed moment of the day.
The Wedding
Clapton Country Club in London was the perfect venue for a celebration of two party lovers yet warm, intimate, the kind of space that makes even a large gathering feel close-knit. These two are social animals with an extraordinary circle of friends and the evening reflected that. One of the grooms DJ’d with a line up of four friends to keep us dancing for the rest of the night. The theme was vinyl, disco balls everywhere, the dance floor barely emptied. Cupcakes and tea kept everyone going mid-evening, pizza arrived late to help us finish the job. Beautiful speeches, PowerPoint presentations, tears of joy, the whole thing. As the celebrant and a guest, I had a ball and so did everyone else.
Celebrating two people who love each other and who you love dearly is always a wonderful occasion, whatever and whoever the couple are and I`m so very honoured to have been part of the beginning and the middle chapters of my friends` love story.
